MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Nepali President Ram Baran Yadav is set to formally declare the new constitution on Sunday, local media reported.
According to The Kathmandu Post newspaper, the Constitution of Nepal will come into force at 5 p.m. [11:15 GMT] on Sunday following seven years of preparations since the country has abolished its monarchy in 2008 after long civil war between the government and Maoist insurgents. The new constitution is expected to officially end the civil war.
In August, Nepal's major political parties agreed on a division of the country into six provinces, which triggered violent protests that have lasted for weeks. Several ethnic groups have been calling for the creation of separate provinces for them in order to ensure they would have political representation, claiming the lawmakers were redrawing country's political map in an unjust way.
The new constitution stipulates that Nepal will remain a secular, federal republic with seven states.
