Three suspected Islamist militants, including a British citizen, have reportedly been arrested by Bangladesh's elite security force over the killing of two prominent atheist bloggers in the country earlier this year.

Bangladesh's Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained three suspected Islamist militants, including a British citizen, over the cold-blooded murder of two eminent atheist bloggers in Bangladesh earlier this year, news reports said.

"We've arrested them in the capital today. We can confirm that Rahman is a British citizen [of Bangladeshi origin]. He is the main planner of the attacks on Avijit Roy and Ananta Bijoy Das," RAB's Major Maksudul Alam was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

Roy was hacked to death by a gang wielding machetes in an attack in the capital Dhaka in February, while Das was murdered in a similar fashion in the northeastern city of Sylhet in May.
