India and Pakistan exchanged heavy fire along the line of control near the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, according to the Indian officer.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Indian and Pakistani servicemen exchanged heavy fire overnight along the line of control near the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior military officer said Monday, as quoted by Indian media.

"Pakistani troops continued small arms firing throughout the night on forward posts along the [line of control] in Krishnagati, Balakote, Sabzian-Mandi and Pallanwala sectors and exchanges took place," the Indian officer was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India (PTI).

According to the officer, there are no reports of the casualties or injuries among military personnel.

The region of Jammu and Kashmir has been disputed by India and Pakistan following the dissolution of British India and the establishment of the two countries as independent states in 1947.

Following four wars and a number of military conflicts, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire in 2003. Nevertheless, the ceasefire has not been strictly observed and both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating the truce.
