A 15-hour riot at a maximum-security prison in Australia’s coastal city of Melbourne was quelled by police, the Australian corrections authority said in a statement on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The riot came a day before all prisons in Australia are due to become smoke-free.

Total of 300 inmates participated in the riot on Tuesday. According to Australia’s news network ABC, heavily armed police stormed the facility overnight to return the remaining 50 prisoners to their cells.

Several inmates and staff members were reportedly injured during the riot.

The Australian corrections authority says no one will be permitted to smoke anywhere on prison property starting July 1, and pipes and tobacco will be considered contraband and subject to confiscation and punishment.
