Border guards of Bangladesh and Myanmar exchanged fire in an area which has recently gained attention for being a people smuggling area.

A "misunderstanding" between Bangladesh and Myanmar border guards led to an exchange of fire which injured one Bangladeshi border guard and led Myanmar to detain the other, AFP reported.

Witnesses told the agency that the Bangladeshi border guards were traveling on the river separating the two countries by boat, which likely led the Myanmar border guards to confuse them for smuggers.
