MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A US attack helicopter involved in relief efforts in quake-hit Nepal was allegedly spotted about two miles north of the nation's capital Kathmandu, Nepal's Interior Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

"We have been told it was spotted in Tamakoshi region," Laxmi Dhakal said, as quoted by Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa).

Dhakal added the ministry would abstain from making any further comments until its helicopters landed in the area and investigated the reports.

The US Defense Department said the UH-1Y Huey chopper with six US marines and two Nepalese men aboard went missing on Tuesday while on mission in the vicinity of Charikot, one of the worst-hit regions in Nepal.

A new strong earthquake measuring 7.3 magnitude struck Nepal on Tuesday, killing at least 42 people and injuring over 1,000, according to the country's National Emergency Operation Center. It came two and a half weeks after another quake of a similar magnitude struck the landlocked mountainous country on April 25, killing more than 8,000.
