Two Ilyushin Il-76 airlifters of the Russian Emergencies Ministry took off from India early Tuesday to evacuate Russians from Nepal.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The planes are carrying about 100 rescuers, as well as humanitarian aid and technical equipment for earthquake relief, head of the ministry’s rescue squad Alexander Romanov said.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on Saturday, causing severe destruction in parts of the country.

The earthquake and its numerous powerful aftershocks claimed the lives of more than 5,000 people, including dozens of climbers who were hit by earthquake-triggered avalanches on Mount Everest.

Countries across the world have offered Nepal both financial and practical assistance to cope with the disaster.
