Hundreds of Australians Unaccounted for in Nepal - Foreign Affairs Dep't
11:51 GMT 26.04.2015 (Updated: 12:09 GMT 26.04.2015) About 300 Australians are unaccounted for in Nepal after Saturday’s massive earthquake, the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Sunday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Australian Embassy in Nepal has so far been able to confirm the safety of some 200 Australian nationals in the disaster-stricken country.
“There are 549 Australians registered as travelling in Nepal and officials are working under challenging conditions to locate all those in the country,” the ministry said in a statement.
Some 2,200 people were killed as a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and numerous powerful aftershocks hit Nepal on Saturday, causing severe destruction in parts of the country.
Tremors of the earthquake, which had its epicenter about 82 kilometers (51 miles) northwest of Nepal's capital Kathmandu, could also be felt in neighboring India, where dozens of people have been killed.
