Number of Nepal Quake Victims Exceeds 2,000

Nepal media report, citing local police that over 2,000 people have died as a result of the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal on Saturday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – Over 2,000 people have died as a result of the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal on Saturday, according to local authorities.

According to NTV, the number of victims in Nepal's capital Kathmandu exceeds 700.

Earlier, it was reported that the death toll from the quake was standing at 1,805 with the number of injured surpassing 4,700.

The quake occurred on Saturday morning about 82 kilometres (51 miles) northwest of Kathmandu, triggering avalanches on Mount Everest, which is located about 160 kilometres (100 miles) east of Nepal's capital.

Rescuers reportedly reached the Mount Everest base camp by helicopter on Sunday morning, recovering 17 bodies. Over 60 have been confirmed injured as a result of the snowslide that covered part of the base camp on Saturday, while around 100 climbers in camps above the base camp are reportedly safe.

The injured are to be airlifted by rescue helicopters, which could not access the area earlier amid cloudy weather.

On Saturday, it was reported that 18 bodies were found on Mount Everest after the earthquake. The new Sunday reports were citing information from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA).

India, Tibet and Bangladesh were also affected by the quake. India's Minister of Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced on Saturday that 36 people were confirmed dead in the country after the earthquake.

A number of world nations, including India and Russia, have offered to help Nepal in its emergency relief efforts, allocating financial aid or rescue teams.

Russia's Emergencies Ministry announced on Saturday that rescue teams consisting of about 100 highly skilled workers equipped with special technology, including drones and portable medical equipment, were standing ready to depart for Nepal.
