Twelve people have been arrested in Malaysia for allegedly planning “chaos,” local police said Sunday, just one day before the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit is set to kick off in the country.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An annual meeting by ASEAN’s 10 member states is set to take place in Malaysia on April 26-27.

“The suspects are believed to have been planning chaos in the country,” Malaysian Chief of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar wrote on his official Facebook page, adding that “explosives were seized.”

The operation was led by the Malaysian Special Branch, an intelligence unit under the Royal Malaysian police.
