NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – Australia would like a free trade agreement with India that will benefit both states, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Monday.
"We want a free trade agreement with India which will be mutually beneficial for both," Bishop said at the Indo-Pacific Oration.
Australia's top diplomat also added that Canberra and New Delhi have signed a deal and are negotiating uranium supplies to India.
"I would like Australia to be the natural partner of choice for Indian energy needs, be it coal, uranium," Bishop said.
Australia did not previously export uranium to India, as the latter is not a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
According to the Australian High Commission, India is Australia's 4th biggest export market, with New Delhi being the fastest growing market for Canberra. Australia exports coal, gold, copper ore, wool and agriculture, among other materials, to India.
