Increasing Volcanic Activity Threatens More Villages Near Mt Sinabung

Sinabung volcano continued to erupt on Wednesday, spewing ash into the sky and sending rivers of lava that burnt several houses in the nearby villages.

Mount Sinabung, a volcano located in the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, continued to erupt on Wednesday, spewing ash into the sky and sending rivers of lava that burnt several houses in the nearby villages.

In an alarming development, the lava flow reached as far as Suka Meriah and Gurukinayan villages, the first time since 2010, according to the Jakarta Post.

No one was injured in the latest eruption since residents, who used to live in villages located in the 5-kilometer (3-mile) radius of the volcano, were evacuated back in November 2013.

Indonesia is part of the so-called Pacific "ring of fire" where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
