Japan's Defense Minister Gen Nakatani reportedly said that the video, released by the Islamic State militants, which purporting to show the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto appears to be genuine.

MOSCOW, February 1 (Sputnik) – A video, released by the Islamic State (IS) militants, which purporting to show the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto appears genuine, Japan's Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said on Sunday, according to Reuters.

Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department reported that the video "has a high degree of credibility," Nakatani was quoted.

The Japanese government was trying to authenticate the video with alleged captive beheading, public broadcaster NHK said on Sunday.

Goto reportedly went to Syria in October 2014 in order to negotiate the release of Haruna Yukawa, a Japanese security company executive. The IS extremists demanded earlier a $200-million ransom for the two Japanese captives.
