Afghan Intelligence Uncover Suicide Attack Plot in Taliban's Cradle City

Afghan Intelligence announced that it uncovered a suicide attack plot by a militant group in the southern city of Kandahar, where the Taliban movement originated.

MOSCOW, January 14 (Sputnik) – A group of six insurgents have been arrested in connection with plans to carry out suicide attacks with two motorcycles filled with explosives in the busy areas of Kandahar, a statement from the country’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) said, as quoted by Khaama Press newspaper Wednesday.

According to the statement, the authorities confiscated 27 magnetic bombs and 10 rounds of RPG-7 anti-tank rockets, among other ammunition.

The Kandahar province, which is known as the birthplace of the Taliban the movement seeking to overthrow the country’s government and impose strict Islam law, is one of Afghanistan’s southern regions infiltrated with actively operating anti-government militant groups.

Meanwhile, the Taliban group blamed for most of the terror attacks in the southern region, last week rejected an offer of cabinet positions in the newly formed Afghan government. The group demanded immunity from prosecution and change to the constitution before engaging in negotiations.

According to the United Nations, about 10,000 civilians were killed or wounded in 2014, as a result of violence in Afghanistan.
