Part of Crashed AirAsia Plane's Tail Found in Java Sea: Official

Head of the Indonesian national search and rescue services Henry Bambang Sulisto stated that tail of the crashed AirAsia flight QZ8501 has been found in the Java Sea.

MOSCOW, January 7 (Sputnik) – Tail of the crashed AirAsia flight QZ8501 has been found in the Java Sea, the head of the Indonesian national search and rescue services (Basarnas) Henry Bambang Sulisto said, as quoted by Indonesia's Detik News.

According to the official, the divers took a photo of the object with a caption, due to which it can be identified as part of the crashed plane.

"Here is a photo of the Air Asia plane intact. Comparing it, I can reassure that this is [the object] a part of the [plane's] tail," Sulisto was quoted by Detik News.

Sulisto added that the tail was first detected by sonars, and finally confirmed by the divers' visualization.

AirAsia's Airbus carrying 162 people on board, crashed into the Java Sea on December 28 en route from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. The plane did not send a distress signal before it lost contact with air traffic control. Indonesian search and rescue teams supported by international partners have been searching for the plane wreckage and the black box. More than three dozen bodies of Flight QZ8501 passengers have been found.
