MOSCOW, December 15 (Sputnik) — A shark attack off Australia’s northeastern coast claimed the life of a teenage boy, AFP reports.
The attack occurred at Rudder Reef, near Port Douglas, Queensland. Greg Thiedecke, executive manager of operations for the Queensland Ambulance Service, said that the victim went into cardiac arrest after he was bitten on his right upper leg, groin and upper arm, The Daily Mail notes.
According to Australia’s ABC News, Daniel Smith, 18, a resident of Mossman died of severe blood loss; Smith and his friends had been fishing two hours from port when the attack occurred.
Col McKenzie, head of the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, said that Rudder Reef wasn’t a common spot for dive tourism operators, but that it was popular with spear fishing enthusiasts, The Daily Mail adds. Shark attacks are relatively rare; the last one having occurred in September off the coast of Byron Bay, New South Wales. The Guardian points out that it was the fourth fatal shark attack in Australia in 2014.
