MOSCOW, December 10 (Sputnik) — Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen has committed to stopping new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections by 2020, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) said.
"The government will not allow any successful program [HIV, tuberculosis and malaria treatment programs] to go bankrupt," the Cambodian prime minister was quoted as saying by UNAIDS on Tuesday.
Hun Sen also emphasized that "the key to the nation's success against HIV is a concerted effort by everyone, especially people infected and affected by HIV."
Cambodia has reached substantial progress and international recognition in its acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) response, as per the UNAIDS Country Progress Report 2014. New HIV infections have decreased by 67 percent.
However, the state still faces challenges. Estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Cambodia is about 75,000. Though more than half of them get antiretroviral therapy, the gaps in access to HIV services remain.
