The ballet is set in three acts and tells a passionate love story of a temple dancer, or bayadere, and a noble warrior taking place in exotic India.

La Bayadere was created by Petipa, who was principal ballet master of the Mariinsky, more than 140 years ago and was set to music by Ludwig Minkus.

The decorations and lightning for the St. Petersburg ballet company were designed by Mikhail Shishliannikov, while the costumes were made by Yevgeny Ponomarev.

The Mariinsky last time treated the Washington audience to La Bayadere in 2008. Mariinsky’s Alexey Repnikov will conduct the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra for the performances.
