The Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency on Monday announced the winners and runners-up of this year's Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest, organized by the agency under the aegis of the Commission of Russia for UNESCO.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The prizes in the Top News category will be awarded to photojournalists Phandulwazi Jikelo from South Africa for his photo series entitled "Grabouw Housing Protest," and Alejandro Martinez Velez from Spain for his series entitled "Migrants in Belgrade."

In the category called My Planet, the winners are Serbian journalist Jelena Jankovic with her single photograph "Selfie Culture," and Russian journalist Pavel Volkov with a series of photographs entitled "Alternate Reality."

Russia is leading in the Sports category, with the prizes being awarded to young photojournalists from Moscow, Vladivostok and Veliky Novgorod cities. Konstantin Chalabov from Veliky Novgorod came first a photo entitled "Elegant Fan," capturing a moment at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Alexei Filippov from Moscow won the prize for his "At Your Fingertips" photo series about gymnastics.

In the category called "Portrait: A Hero of Our Time," Russian Valentin Yegorshin won in with a photograph entitled "Face From the Past" about the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Revolution. Danilo Garcia Di Meo won with a series of photographs called "What?" telling the story about a young Italian woman Ambra.

"The contest reaches further every year. This year, entries from 76 countries were submitted. The winning works prove again that young photojournalists respond very accurately to the most important and significant events in the lives of ordinary people, countries and the entire world. They always manage to find a succinct and poignant photographic image," Alexander Shtol, Director of Rossiya Segodnya's Integrated Directorate of Photography, said.

Special prizes were established in three categories this year, including Top News, My Planet and Portrait: A Hero of Our Time. The prize sponsors include major international media, such as Shanghai United Media Group (SUMG), Al Mayadeen TV pan-Arabic media holding and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The media partners selected their own winners. In the Top News category, the ICRC awarded a special prize for humanitarian photography to a single photograph by Anna Pantelia from Greece, entitled "The European Dream" and the "Migrants in Belgrade" photo series by Alejandro Martinez Velez from Spain. Within the My Planet category, the Shanghai United Media Group gave the prize to Anar Movsumov from Russia for his "Theater Without Borders" single photo. Finally, Al Mayadeen TV awarded a special prize to the "Silent Howl" series by Md Shahnewaz Khan from Bangladesh.

The full list of winners has been published on stenincontest.com website. The awards ceremony and exhibit opening will take place at Moscow's Lumiere Brothers Gallery on September 7, 2017. The grand prix winner will not be revealed until then.

The Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest aims to support young photographers and to draw public attention to the challenges of photojournalism in today’s world. The contest was first organized in December 2014 in memory of Stenin who was killed in eastern Ukraine on August 6, 2014, when the car he was driving while on an editorial assignment was shot at and burned on a highway.

In 2017, the contest received about 5,000 photos from 76 countries in the above-mentioned categories.

The international media partners of the contest include Sputnik News Agency and Radio, the Askanews news agency, the Independent Media holding, the Notimex news agency, the RT TV channel and news site, The Royal Photographic Society, the Shanghai United Media Group (SUMG), the Xinhua news agency, the ANDES news agency, the news agency ANA and Al Mayadeen TV channel.
