Back in 2013, legendary Japanese anime master and director Hayao Miyazaki announced he would retire. However, on November 13 in a NHK television special broadcast it was reported that Miyazaki wanted to return.

According to the broadcast titled “Hayao Miyazaki: The Man Who Is Not Done,” the 75-year-old Japanese anime master revealed that he has been working on a rcent 12-minute CG short film called “Kemushi no Boro (Boro the Caterpillar)” but was dissatisfied and decided to turn it into a full-length film. It will be his final anime feature and his first one created using computer graphics.

In the schedule listed in his proposal, Miyazaki suggested that the film could be done by 2019, before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. He also noted that if the feature takes him five years to make, he would be 80 years old at its completion

Despite not officially getting a green-light from studio bosses, Miyazaki decided to start animation work on the project. He plans to create storyboards for about 100 cuts of footage.

Miyazaki planned the story of “Kemushi no Boro” for almost 20 years and describes it as "a story of a tiny, hairy caterpillar, so tiny that it may be easily squished between your fingers," the NHK special cites him.

The short film was originally created for the Ghibli Museum, which opened in Tokyo in 2001 and showcases artifacts from Studio Ghibli, which Miyazaki co-founded. The studio’s many films include Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle.
