Those who think that there is no place in Syria to relax and enjoy one's life are wrong. Despite the civil war and violent clashes in the country, there are still a lot of open cafes and bars where visitors can enjoy delicious food and chill out with their friends.

US citizen Thomas Webber has been living in Damascus for 40 years. He has not left the city even after the military conflict in the country broke out.

Webber started his own blog, where he writes about the Syrian cuisine and advises travelers. In an interview with RT, he shared his impressions about local food and life in the war-torn, but still beautiful country.

According to Webber, after 40 years of living in Syria, the city has become his home. He said that there are a lot of people from different countries living in Damascus even despite the war.

Webber is excited about the local food and restaurants in Damascus.

"Here you can find dozens of decent restaurants," the man said. "The food here is fantastic. Don't think that I only write positive reviews. Sometimes I criticize poor service and food quality. But, fortunately, this is rare. Most local restaurants operate at a high level," the American said.

Webber also confessed that after the ceasefire came into force in Syria, he feels safer there than even in America. According to him, many people in the US walk around with weapons, are totally unpredictable and might start shooting anytime.

"And in Damascus, I know exactly who they are. In Syria, they do not shoot at schools and theaters, crazy people don't kill children and families. So I live better here," Webber said.

Despite the fact that many people now refrain from visiting Syria, Webber is optimistic about the future of the country. He is confident that the country will soon live in peace and there will be many tourists who will appreciate the local cuisine.
