Dream Come True: German School Lets Children Sleep In

Subscribe
A German school near the city of Aachen carried out a new experiment providing students with a flexible schedule and allowing them to sleep longer.

Students can now come to class later and get enough sleep in the morning. The results of the new experiment will be announced in the near future, but so far the initiative was met with great joy.

"They [students] absolutely love it. When we told our students about this project, we immediately received their full, almost one hundred percent support," the school's deputy head master Martin Wüller told Sputnik.

The new concept was inspired by a conference organized by a respectable teacher from Hamburg, Prof. Dr. Peter Struck, where he talked about the peculiarities of the modern education system and the schools' daily routine.

According to Struck, schools systematically deprive young people of a very important part of sleep, forcing students to wake up early and go to class. The sleep disturbance results in a worse assimilation of new information by pupils, because they practically study at a time when they should be sleeping.

Following the conference, the school's management decided to carry out the mentioned experiment and introduce a flexible schedule for senior students.

"We offered them the following [concept]: if they can distribute their free time in a way that they fulfil their ten-hour weekly assignment, we properly document it and allow them to come to the second class," Wüller said.

According to Wüller, most students are very enthusiastic about the possibility of a free choice and thus study even more efficiently than before.

"During the exams, some students took not 10, but even 13 or 14 hours for preparation. The tests have not yet been checked, but I am sure that it [the new system] gave its results," Wüller concluded.
