The Finnish Maritime Administration was finally able to confirm the identity of an 18th century frigate which sank in the Gulf of Finland almost 300 years ago.

The derelict vessel that was discovered at the bottom of the gulf at the depth of 64 meters turned out to be Huis tе Warmelo, a frigate built in 1708 at the port town of West Frisia which eventually became part of the Netherlands.

In August 1715 the ship sank after running aground while escorting merchant vessels in the Baltic Sea.

The divers who studied the wreck report that the ship rests on the seabed in an upright position, and is in very good condition, with all of its cannons still on the gun deck.

According to Finnish broadcaster Yle, the ship was detected several years ago during a seabed mapping exercise by the country’s maritime administration, though attempts to document the find began only in 2014.

The identification was made possible thanks to the efforts of a Dutch historian named Peter Swart who found an old sea chart marking the location of the wreck.
