Have some place to be that isn’t dog friendly? Never fear. The first canine parking lots have opened in downtown Belgrade near a local administration building.

The Serbian capital’s Old Town (Stari Grad) moved to become more visitor-friendly by designating puppy-friendly lots where owners can park their pets in a safe place, and be sure their canine companions will wait until they are finished with their human business.

“Today, we have established six lots in front of the community [hall] where dogs can be left and dog owners will have no further need to ask somebody to look after their pet, or to tie it up in distant and unsecure spots in order to finish doing their business in the community [hall],” Petar Bojovic, a member of the council of Stari Grad was quoted as saying by Tanjug news agency on Saturday.

He added that the community has no intent to stop at just six lots, but will continue to create dog parking lots in other locations across the community, which is situated in the very center of Belgrade.

The community has a high number of dog owners, according to Bojovic, and local authorities have been providing free bags for owners to clean up after their pets.

In addition to an opening ceremony for the puppy parks, twelve of Stari Grad’s best dogs, chosen on social media, were awarded with food, 80 kilos in total. Most owners of the decorated dogs transferred their pet’s awards to homeless dogs.
