John Woo, a legendary Hong Kong film director well-known for his iconic Hollywood blockbusters and mind-blowing tricks, loves to watch old Soviet films and dreams of working with “Leviathan” director Andrei Zvyagintsev.
“Every modern filmmaker, no matter where he lives, knows at least one old Soviet film. I'm sure that Soviet films have a powerful influence on beginning directors,” the 69-year-old cinema legend said in an exclusive interview with Sputnik.
Woo noted that works of contemporary Russian artists are less familiar and expressed hopes that the situation would change in the future. He said that he was fascinated by Andrei Zvyagintsev’s "Leviathan", which was nominated for Oscar in 2014.
“A very sincere, touching and at the same time very difficult movie. Leviathan makes an indelible impression. One can learn many things from the author. I would love to work with him on some project,” Woo said.
“I hope to come to Russia to shoot a film here. I would love the opportunity,” Woo said.
John Woo is famous worldwide for his movies "Mission Impossible", "Face/Off" and "Red Cliff." The cinema legend came to Moscow to present his new film "The Crossing," which is about the love stories of three young couples during the Chinese Revolution (1946-1950).
The film is set to hit Russian screens on July 23.
