The Doors' Founding Member Ray Manzarek Dies Aged 74

Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist who was a founding member of The Doors, died at the age of 74 in a hospital in the German city of Rosenheim late on Monday, his publicist said in a statement on Tuesday.

MOSCOW, May 21 (RIA Novosti) - Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist who was a founding member of The Doors, died at the age of 74 in a hospital in the German city of Rosenheim late on Monday, his publicist said in a statement on Tuesday.

Heidi Robinson Fitzgerald said in a statement Manzarek lost his battle with bile duct cancer. The information was confirmed by Manzarek’s manager Tom Vitorino.

The musician died around 23:30 Moscow time [7:30 p.m. GMT], with his family and friends around him.

Manzarek, along with lead singer Jim Morrison, formed The Doors in 1965. The band became one of the most successful rock’n’roll projects originating in the 1960s. The Doors singer died in the bath in his Paris apartment of a suspected drug overdose in 1971, aged 27.

On July 7, 2011, two remaining members of legendary rock group - Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger - played their first ever concert in Russia to mark the 40th anniversary of Morrison's death.
