International organizations should alienate Russia in order to withstand its undermining activities. This point of view was presented in a recent article run by Bloomberg in its opinion section. The author of the article purported that Russia's participation in international bodies discredits them.

Sputnik discussed the calls presented in the Bloomberg article with Dr. Vida Bajc, a sociologist at Temple University and author of a book "Security and Everyday Life."

Sputnik: How would you assess the calls presented in the Bloomberg article? What is your general take on the "Russia-the-bad-guy" narrative in the West?

Dr. Vida Bajc: When the Russian Federation or other countries insist that the institution of global governance such as the United Nations be used as a format for decision making in international affairs, or when they insist on international law and regulation and agreements, or when they insist on diplomacy they are presenting an alternative to this power to act on your own, and this power to act as you please. So it is this alternative that these certain political elements that are acting on their own, that are so comfortable to act as they please cannot tolerate, because it goes against their argument and the way that they're used to acting. So I'm talking about all of this because I think we need to be focused on some much larger issue here.

So what I'm suggesting is that journalists and scholars really need to be focused on educating people, informing the public why the principle of innocent until proven guilty is the cornerstone of modern jurisprudence, why democracy is a system of popular decision making by the people and for the people which, as far as we know at the moment, really has no alternative. So rather than being focused on small little Russia-bashing incidents what I'm suggesting here is that we should have a major public debate about why we have these democratic principles, why they're central, so Russia fits in here because it's been doing a wonderful job by insisting that the proof must be provided, that journalists go to war zones, that they report from war zones as opposed to staying at a news briefing.

Sputnik: They say that we're living in a post evidence, post facts world and environment now and I think you've just confirmed that. The article purports that Russia is seeking to destroy international law and order, how valid is such a viewpoint from your opinion then?

Dr. Vida Bajc: From my own research that I've been doing this is simply an alternative way of conducting politics and organizing social relations, and so it is alternative that these powers that want to act on their own cannot tolerate, and so making these arguments that doesn't really hold water.

Sputnik: What's your feeling about the credibility of international organizations the way they're dealing with the current problems because it seems to be that they all have the same strategy, they're all in it together?

Dr. Vida Bajc: It is a global world and we really don't have any other alternative than democratic social relations and democratic political relations, and these institutions, the United Nations and everything at that level, are absolutely crucial, but they must be functioning democratically. They must be all-inclusive, they must work on these principles. Why don't they? Well, that's something for political scientists to figure out, and what must be done to change that, and to fix it as they say.

Sputnik: How would you assess the Russian stand on the international arena at a time when so much pressure is exercised on Moscow? What's your personal feeling?

Dr. Vida Bajc: My personal feeling is that what I see at least, I'm not in Moscow so as a sociologist I need to be on the ground, I don't make statements about which I haven't studied myself, but from what I see on television, what I see reported on the Russian Federation insists on diplomacy, insists on this sort of diplomatic dignified presentation, and I think this is a really good way to go.
