Former Trump foreign policy aide Carter Page’s admission that he informed Attorney General Jeff Sessions about a trip to Moscow will not advance or support claims that the campaign collaborated with Russia, former EU adviser Paolo von Schirach told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "The recent news concerning a visit to Moscow by Carter Page, another early [President Donald] Trump supporter with foreign policy expertise, does not change much," Schirach said. "Unless there is more to this story, this new development can hardly be interpreted as part of a well-crafted undertaking on the part of the Trump campaign to engage Russian officials at multiple levels."

In a closed congressional hearing last week Page said he notified Sessions that he was traveling to Russia during the presidential campaign, contradicting Sessions’ previous testimony.

Page’s testimony will unlikely help Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe either, although the former FBI Director could step up psychological pressure to force a confession in exchange for leniency.

Russia has repeatedly denied the accusations of Moscow's interference in the US presidential election, saying that it had not served the interests of Russia and calling the allegations absurd.

Paolo von Schirach is President of the Global Policy Institute and Professor of International Relations and Economics at BAU International University in Washington, DC.
