Nine years after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the world against irresponsible US policies spreading instability and threats of new wars around the world, those dangers today are greater than ever, US analysts told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "I read the 2007 speech when [Putin] first delivered it and pretty much agreed with everything he had to say. Now the US/NATO confrontation against Russia has become even worse and more dangerous," University of Illinois Professor of International Law Francis Boyle said.

In his 2007 speech at the Munich Security Conference, Putin accused the United States of provoking a new nuclear arms race, expanding NATO in Europe and making the Middle East more unstable. Putin also said that Washington ignored the United Nations and relied on the unilateral use of force.

All these problems had become much worse since then, Boyle pointed out.

"With the deployment of NATO troops right up to the border of Russia for the first time, we are on the verge of a reverse Cuban missile crisis. And with both countries bombing in Syria, anything could go wrong there too," he warned.

Current growing tensions across the Middle East and throughout Eastern Europe generated by destabilizing US policies had already created conditions alarmingly similar to those in 1914 and 1939, Boyle observed, at the outbreak of the two world wars.

The Obama administration, like that of President George W. Bush, appeared determined to assert close US control over the countries sitting on the main hydrocarbon resources of the world in the Middle East and Central Asia, Boyle also noted.

"The Bush and Obama administrations have already targeted the remaining hydrocarbon reserves of Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia for further conquest or domination, together with the strategic choke-points at sea and on land required for their transportation," he stated.

This would give Washington control and domination of two-thirds of the world’s hydrocarbon resources and direct control of the fundamental energizer of the global economic system — oil and gas, Boyle continued.

"The factual circumstances surrounding the outbreaks of both the First World War and the Second World War currently hover like twin Swords of Damocles over the heads of all humanity," he concluded.

US historian and political commentator Patrick Smyth agreed that Putin’s 2007 speech had been confirmed by many developments of the past nine years.

"Putin… is undeniably superior as a statesman next to almost all his contemporaries. He chooses his ground well. The Munich conference was an excellent venue at which to challenge the Americans and NATO as to the European deployments and the Middle East crisis," he said.

Smyth praised Putin’s grasp of history — "which is the last thing American leaders want to cultivate in their citizenry" — and his ability to express fundamental international issues clearly and directly, as he did in his Munich speech.

Francis Boyle is a professor of international law and veteran author, historian and human rights advocate. He has sat on the board of Amnesty International and criticized it for having its policies influenced by the US government. Boyle’s books include "The Criminality of Nuclear deterrence" (2013), "Destroying Libya and World Order" (2013) and "World Politics and International Law" (2012).

Patrick Smyth is a US historian and analyst. He writes on foreign affairs for salon.com and his books include "Time No Longer: Americans After the American Century" (2013) and "Somebody Else’s Century: East and West in a Post-Western World" (2010).

Something has to be done about NATO in the US. This is a big problem of misunderstanding. Most Americans see NATO as a friendly and non-threatening peacekeeping force. While Russia sees NATO as a massive threat. In these circumstances, the US could accidently start a major war, and not even realize they were provoking it. We need more understanding about the differing interpretations of NATO on each side here.

What is a reverse Cuban Missile Crisis?

Mostly that speech was vehemently attacked in the Western press without actually quoting it. The Neocons went ballistic. A few publications did publicize it.

On the facebook side there is a silly comment "Russia attacked Ukraine in 2014" illustrating how propaganda shapes the narrative. Clearly not informed about the Orange Revolution 2004 and how the resulting mess backfired into the democratic election of Yanukovich, nor aware how the European Neighborhood Policy and the US instigated coup combined in the signing of that association treaty so damaging to Ukraine's economy.

Porkbelly Porkerpig, How utterly naive can one be to believe that US-Nato is a peacekeeping force when US-Nato and their right arm main stream propaganda is the greatest threat to humanity that ever existed on this earth.
US-Nato and media is part of an eval crime sydicate and if people would know how eval they are they woldnt be able to sleep at night.
Do some research for facts. Thats all I can say.

Porkbelly you were being sarcastic and using reverse psychology right! otherwise I don't believe what you just posted.........for others look up Cuban missile crisis! Americans were acutely aware of the danger and fear involved with having missiles on there doorstep! but now 50 years later its ok! for US dominated NATO to be the aggressor. Perhaps you could lobby the main T.V. news channels to replay the doco on "Cuban missile crisis"

It was a legendary speech and Putin's words hit the west like a tone of bricks -- a baptism of fire! I downloaded and listen to it from time to time and this speech, as fresh as it was when he made it, will go down in history as the speech which opened a corrupt and jaded World's eyes.

If anyone has not had the thrill of listening to it, just search:

Vladimir Putin's legendary speech at Munich Security Conference -- (1/4) and enjoy it -- Subtitles in English. Enjoy.

      Porkbelly Porkerpig,

HI -- reverse cuban missile crisis == is a reference to the 1960's during the presidency of Kennedy.

at that time - from the ''history" as seen by americans --

the USSR placed nuclear weapons missiles in cuba...presumably to point at the USA mainland...

and so kennedy threatened a blockade and essentially tit-for-tat..

the USSR POLITBURO chairman was then NIKITA KRUSCHEV..who was the one who sent the missiles to cuba. eventually the russians removed them...

but THAT was after kennedy , i think, called moscow to resolve the issue for russia to take them away ..

and RUSSIA'S condition was "first -- remove YOUR NUCLEAR MISSILES IN TURKEY"

      which the USA started.

in other words -- when people say "cuban missile crisis" it makes it look as if ONLY the USA was ''aggressively threatened with nukes in is neighborhood"

      by russia (ussr) --

while LEAVING OUT the fact that it was the USA THAT ACTUALLY STARTED IT ALL --

BY PUTTING IN turkey - ITS NUKES aimed at russia.

it should really be known then as

the 'TURKEY NUCLEAR CRISIS STARTED BY THE USA".

in which the cuba part - was just russia's RESPONSE to something the USA started.

that's the exact chronology of it.
    • Please also list President Putin's Predictions for the next 10 years.

More deals with NATO. More backstabbing by NATO. More growing Swiss Bank accounts. More graves and suffering. More NATO Zionist Axis expansion. More regrets. Some serious policy changes are needed now, to permanently end all relations and cooperation, with all NATO Zionist Axis entities, to avoid more of the same regrets and failures.

Russia should learn from the past and end all diplomatic relations and cooperation with the Zionist West Axis. Diplomacy was a catastrophic failure. NATO has crossed the East Germany line and reunified the Axis once again. For invasion right into the heart of Russia, with the continuation of the Barborossa Holocaust, once again. How many more of these Western Napoleonic Holocausts must one endure for Russia to finally get the message?

Russia doing the right thing to support of her own national interest, as in also supporting loyal Russian Allies. Does not require any consultation with the enemy to take place. Doing so is likened to seeking the trust and support of the Ribbentrop Nazi Axis for every Russian action. It makes Russia look bad for Russian Diplomats such as a smiling Lavrov to be seen with the murderers of Russians, like Kerry, etc engaging in a buddy-buddy discussions. Under the backdrop of murdered Russians, etc. at the bloody dripping hands of NATO Zionist Axis.

In the eyes of the West, diplomacy, seeking cease-fire agreements, and deals are signs of weakness. As the old saying goes, "Only Losers Cry: Deal." In the face of actual Axis invasion Stalin wrongly immediately sought and requested a cease-fire with the invading Axis. This Russia facing invasion on nearly all fronts, is wrongly doing the same. Perhaps playing for time.

Learning from the past, Russia should be on a War footing and conduct War, against Barry-Kerry-Ribbentrop, not Diplomacy of cooperation and respect for mutual interests, that horribly failed, with the same false security of the Nazi-Soviet Pact.

President Putin "undeniably superior as a statesman" should have realized by now. That diplomacy, the fallacy of "Peace in Our Time" and the other nonsense of trusting the NATO Zionist Axis, are not a rational mindest. That Russian Force, Strength and Determination, are the only matters of consequence.

If the suffering and graves of WWII are now forgotten. Then the suffering and graves still fresh, in LNR, DNR, South Ossetia, Abkazia, etc., should awaken the this Pro-West "Rock Music" oriented Government's fading memory to action.

Porkbelly Porkerpig said: "What is a reverse Cuban Missile Crisis?"

That was before the Cuban Missile Crisis when the US stationed nuclear armed Jupiter Intermediate range ballistic missiles in Turkey. The USSR responded by building missile bases in Cuba - which initiated the Cuban Missile crisis you mention. Unfortunately this bit of history is rarely mentioned let alone widely known. You can search for it on wikipedia.

When will Russia wake up.? The United States wants war with Russia. The economy in the USA is falling apart and they want a diversion to cover the collapse of the economy. Russia will be destroyed if it does not strike first with a deadly blow and take out the US. I am a USA citizen and I know what I am talking about. My country will destroy Russia if Russia keeps acting like a coward and running away. Please Russia, get some back bone and grow a set of balls.!! God bless Putin and God bless Russia.

Russia is busted anyway. Generals of the Russian military junta were unable to see the implications when they decided to assault the Slavic brothers in Ukraine. In a few years time Russian neo-feudal state will collapse and the fragments will emerge as NovoRussias. It will be a state of affairs beneficial to everyone - Russians and non-Russians alike.
