WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Thomas Zimmer — Newly declared US Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry lacks both popular and financial support, experts told Sputnik.
“He [Perry] doesn’t have the support of the big GOP [Republican Party] money,” University of Detroit Mercy Communication Studies Professor Jason Roche said on Friday.
On Thursday, Perry announced his intention to seek the US Republican nomination for the US presidency.
Roche noted Perry probably lacks the political strength to defeat expected Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
“Without some [Republican] groundswell, he [Perry] can’t compete with other GOP candidates or Clinton,” she said.
Roberts said she believed the public still remembered the Perry’s public gaffes during his unsuccessful 2012 bid for the Republican nomination.
“He really said ‘oops’ when he couldn’t remember the name of the third government agency he would eliminate [during a debate],” Roberts said.
Roberts argued Perry might benefit from his lack of ties to Washington and because of his executive experience as governor of Texas, but these would be insufficient to overcome his handicaps.
Perry served as governor of Texas from December 21, 2000 to January 20, 2015, longer than any other governor in the state’s history.
