MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) – Europe respects and welcomes the results of Scotland’s independence referendum, praising the Scots’ decision to remain in the UK and avoiding “the serious economic, social, institutional and political consequences,” Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Friday in his official statement.

Mariano Rajoy congratulated Scots “who yesterday decided in a clear an unequivocal manner to continue being part of the United Kingdom, and consequently, the European Union” on the results of the referendum, held “peacefully and with scrupulous respect to the laws of their country.”

“The Scots’ decision has avoided serious economic, social, institutional and political consequences in the event of separation from the United Kingdom and Europe”, Rajoy said.

The results of the Scottish referendum will benefit Europe in general and Italy in particular, ex-Prime Minister of Italy stated.

“Scotland has decided. Good for us and for Europe,” Enrico Letta wrote Friday on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Luca Zaia, the President of Veneto, a region in Italy having its own movement for independence, said Friday in his interview with the Anch’io radio station that despite the results of the vote, he and other like-minded people will continue to promote the idea of holding a similar referendum.

In a statement on the result of the referendum in Scotland published by the European Council Friday, the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said he respected the choice of the Scottish citizens.

“I respect and welcome the choice expressed by the people of Scotland in yesterday’s referendum,” Van Rompuy’s statement reads. “I welcome that the United Kingdom will stay together, as stated by Prime Minister Cameron this morning.”

“The United Kingdom is and will remain an important member of the European Union to the benefit of all citizens and member states of the European Union,” Van Rompuy stated.

European Parliament President Martin Schultz also welcomed the results of the Scottish independence referendum, saying he was “relieved” about Scotland’s decision to remain in the UK with 55.3 percent of Scots voting against separation, AFP reported Friday.

“I admit, I am relieved about the result,” Shultz said on German radio after the results of the referendum were announced, as quoted by AFP.

“The next time I meet (British Prime Minister) David Cameron, I'll tell him that I like a United Kingdom in a united Europe," he stated.

"I welcome the decision of the Scottish people to maintain the unity of the United Kingdom. This outcome is good for the united, open and stronger Europe that the European Commission stands for," President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said in a statement published on the official European Commission website Friday.

“The European Commission will continue to engage in a constructive dialogue with the Scottish Government, in areas under its responsibility, that are important to Scotland's future, including jobs and growth, energy, climate change and the environment, and smarter regulation,” Barroso noted.

With all ballots counted, Scotland elected to stay in the United Kingdom with 44.7 percent of Scottish people voting for independence and 55.3 percent voting against.

The independence referendum, which took place on Thursday, September 18, saw a turnout of 84.59 percent.
