The war memorial to commemorate those 27 million Soviet people who died in WWII, was unveiled on May 9, 1999 during the 54th anniversary of the end of that war. It is located in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, adjacent to the Imperial War Museum.
Speaking at the solemn ceremony, Russian Ambassador to UK Alexander Yakovenko thanked Gibson for his assistance in organizing events that mark the Victory Day and the Holocaust Memorial Day.
Two more medals were granted to Soviet War Memorial Trust Fund’s Chairman Philip Matthews and its former Honorary Secretary Jean Turner. A Pushkin medal was awarded to Duchess of Abercorn, Alexandra Anastasia Hamilton, who is a British descendant of the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
