Moscow, October 30 (RIA Novosti) – Rossiya Segodnya’s special photo correspondent Valery Melnikov has won the Professional Photographer of the Year 2014 prize. His photo, The Black Days of Ukraine, took first place in the News category.
The photo was taken during Melnikov’s trip to Ukraine in early July and shows local residents fleeing a fire caused by a Ukrainian Armed Forces airstrike in the village of Luhanskaya.
The runners-up in the News category were K. M. Asad from Bangladesh with an entry called The Price of Slavery and Eddie Mulholland from the US, who specializes in sports photography, with a photo composition of a World War I reburial.
The annual photo contest is held by the UK-based magazine, Professional Photographer. This year, there were approximately 5,500 entries in 15 categories.
