MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Amadou Toumani Toure, the president of the Western African nation of Mali from 2002-2012, passed away early on Tuesday in Turkey, where he was undergoing medical treatment, shortly after he had turned 72, the Jeune Afrique newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Toure underwent heart surgery in the Malian capital of Bamako before he was flown to Istanbul for health reasons. He passed away overnight into Tuesday.

Toure had been in power for two consecutive terms before he was overthrown in 2012 by military elements and went into hiding. The former president lived in exile in neighbouring Senegal before he returned to Mali in 2017. Senegal's president, Macky Sall, on Tuesday expressed regret over his death.
