Zimbabwean Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo was among ex-President Mugabe's allies who were arrested in the wake of the military takeover in the country earlier this month.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Ignatius Chombo has appeared before Harare's Magistrate's Court on Saturday to face charges of fraud, corruption and abuse of power that allegedly took place more than a decade ago, the African News Agency (ANA) reported, citing court papers.

The ousted minister was a co-director of Harvest Net Enterprises (Private) Limited, with the cost of property believed to be stolen standing at $3.6 million, according to the agency.

Chombo is one of Zimbabwe ex-leader Mugabe's cabinet ministers detained after the military seized power in the country's capital city of Harare in a bid to remove the "criminals" around the president who were "causing social and economic suffering in the country."

The army's actions resulted in Mugabe's impeachment, with his longtime supporter former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was officially sworn in as the new president of Zimbabwe on Friday.
