The death toll in the landslide in the town of Regent, located near Sierra Leone's capital of Freetown, has risen to 499, media reported Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Xinhua news agency, the Medical Aid Team of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has treated over 70 people affected by the mudslide.

Heavy rains resulted in floods and landslide in Sierra Leone on Monday. According to previous media reports, nearly 400 bodies have been recovered, while some 1,500 people are still missing.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said in a press release on Tuesday that an estimated 3,000 or more people were believed to have lost their homes and were in immediate need of emergency assistance and shelter.

International charity Save the Children expressed concerns in a statement on Friday over the potential spread of cholera and contamination of water in Sierra Leone.
