WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Embassy advised Americans to avoid demonstrations, ensure they have extra food, water and medication at hand and establish a communication plan with friends and family.
"The US Embassy in Kinshasa informs US citizens of clashes between security forces and protesters in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi and other cities, which have included gunfire and tear gas," the message stated on Tuesday. "Remain indoors in a safe location until further notice."
Moreover, it called on Americans to exercise caution when near protests or large gatherings, and carry identification due to the extensive ID checks at the checkpoint established by Congo’s security forces.
In October, the government made an agreement with part of the opposition to postpone the country’s presidential election. According to the agreement, the new election is to take place no later than April 2018.
However, radical opposition members continue to demand Kabila’s resignation as president of Congo.
