The US diplomatic mission in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi will be closed on Friday after a shooting incident nearby, the embassy said in a press release on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, media reported that a suspected member of the Islamist group al-Shabaab has been shot dead outside the American embassy after attempting to stab a guard.

"The Embassy will be closed to the public on October 28," the release stated. "While routine consular services have been cancelled, emergency consular services for US citizens continue to be available."

The embassy has previously noted that none of its personnel was involved in the shooting.

According to media reports, US Federal Bureau of Investigation agents as well as Kenyan officers were seen at the scene of the incident.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate based in Somalia, has been staging attacks in Kenya for sending troops to help the weak Somalian government in its struggle for the control of the country’s territory with Islamists, warlords, and pirates.
