US Forces Conduct 2 Airstrikes in Libya in Support of Anti-Daesh Operations

US forces carried two airstrikes near the Libyan city of Sirte on Monday as part of an aerial campaign requested by Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The airstrikes on Monday struck one Daesh vehicle and four fighting positions, according to the Africa Command.

"These airstrikes bring the total number of airstrikes in support of Operation Odyssey Lightning, which began Aug. 1, to 48," the release stated on Tuesday.

On August 1, the United States began a new air campaign at the request of and in coordination with the GNA aimed at fighting Daesh militants.

The campaign, called Operation Odyssey Lightning, will allow the GNA to make a strategic advance against the terror group’s positions in Sirte, according to the Pentagon.
