The United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said in a statement that it is increasing its activities in the context of a growing number of suspected cholera cases in South Sudan.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, the South Sudanese Ministry of Health issued a statement warning about 30 suspected cases of the disease, registered in Juba.

According to UNICEF, a total number of suspected cases across the country reached 141 by Wednesday with six reported deaths.

"Amid a rise in the number of suspected cases of cholera in South Sudan, UNICEF is rapidly increasing its response activities… In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and partner agencies, UNICEF is providing medical supplies, sanitation services and community awareness," the statement said on Wednesday.

Despite the fact that the cholera cases remain unconfirmed, because of lack of diagnostic equipment, UNICEF and its partners are providing necessary items to treat the disease, the statement added.

Humanitarian situation in South Sudan has decreased after fierce clashes renewed in the country between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir Mayardit and those supporting First Vice President Riek Machar earlier in July. Over 300 people reportedly died in the clashes.
