UN's Libya Envoy Condemns Killing of 12 Released Prisoners in Tripoli

Martin Kobler condemned the killing of 12 released prisoners which occurred on June 9 and called for a probe.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UN's envoy for Libya Martin Kobler on Monday condemned the killing of 12 released prisoners in Tripoli on June 9, and called for an investigation.

“The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, condemns in the strongest terms the killing of 12 prisoners, which occurred on 9 June 2016 in Tripoli, after their release was ordered by the court. He expresses his deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims,” UNSMIL said in a statement published on its website on Monday.

Libya has been in a state of turmoil since 2011, when a civil war broke out in the country and long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown, and the country was contested by two rival governments — the internationally-recognized Council of Deputies based in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress.

On March 31, the long-anticipated UN-backed Government of National Accord in Libya started to perform its duties, with the conflict outcome yet to be addressed.
