MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Monday found a rebel leader from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
"#ICC Trial Chamber III declares Jean-Pierre #Bemba Gombo guilty for war crimes and crimes against humanity," the court said on its Twitter page.
Bemba was accused of responsibility for murders, rapes and pillaging committed by his troops in Central African Republic in 2002-2003. He sent over a thousand fighters to the neighboring country to help put down an attempted coup.
The Bemba case was opened in 2010 after he was arrested in Belgium in 2008.
