MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Troops launched an assault on Daesh positions in the port of Mreisa some 15 miles southwest of Benghazi, which served as an arms and ammunition supply point for the Islamist fighters, according to the Erem News online publication.
One of the extremists’ leaders and an undisclosed number of fighters have been killed in the operation.
The Libyan armed forces lost at least 30 troops during the advance, dubbed "The Blood of Martyrs," in and around Benghazi.
Daesh has gained a foothold in the North African state after the 2011 toppling of long-time Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and subsequent political and security turmoil.
