According to the press release, "crude supply challenges arising from recent attacks on vital crude pipelines" led to the operational shutdown of the refineries on Sunday.
The Bonny-Okrika and Escravos Warri supply lines to the refineries have "suffered breaches" as a result of several last week's bombings.
Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer. Two refineries in the city of Port Harcourt are able to produce 210,000 barrels per day, while Kaduna refinery's daily production capacity stands at 110,000 barrels.
