MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The BBC reported, citing witnesses and a police source, that there were dozens of bodies, primarily of young men, with hands tied behind their backs, who appear to have been shot.
Since late April, Burundi has been in a state of a political crisis as President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his bid for a third term in office, despite being constitutionally bound to step down after two terms. His third-term bid was followed by an attempted coup in May.
On Friday, unidentified attackers launched coordinated assaults on several army barracks in Burundi. According to police, 12 of the attackers had been killed and 20 arrested.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attacks and said the UN extended its full support to promoting a peaceful crisis settlement in the country.
