US citizens in the Tunisian capital of Tunis should refrain from going to the city center after a terrorist attack has been undertaken on a police bus carrying presidential guards, the US Embassy in Tunisia said in an emergency message on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Tuesday, 12 people died in a bomb attack on a police bus, according to media reports. Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi declared shortly a state of emergency saying the country is at war against terrorism.

“US Embassy personnel have been advised to avoid central Tunis, including the Medina, pending further updates and guidance from the Embassy,” the message stated.

The US Embassy in Tunisia advised Americans to exercise caution, avoid crowds and be alert to the possibility of being kidnapped.
