The Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa remains a global threat despite a largely improved epidemiological situation in affected countries, the World Health Organization said Monday.

ENEVA (Sputnik) — According to a WHO statement, the conclusion has been made by the 7th meeting of Emergency Committee convened by the WHO Director-General regarding the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa.

"The Committee advised that the EVD outbreak continues to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern," the statement said.

According to latest WHO data, a total of 11,311 people have died worldwide since the start of the outbreak in 2014. The WHO declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on August 8, 2014.

This is the first Ebola outbreak to reach epidemic proportions.
