Post-Transition Efforts in Central African Republic to Cost $202 Million

Disarming and demobilizing ex-combatants in the Central African Republic (CAR), as well as other post-transition efforts, will cost $202 million over the next 18 months, the United Nations said.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – After a high-level meeting on CAR on the margins of the UN General Assembly on Thursday, the United Nations said that stability in the country remains uncertain.

“The Government estimates that the three priorities of disarming and demobilizing ex-combatants; promoting justice and reconciliation; and good governance and economic development, will cost USD $202 million over the next 18 months. Around USD $85 million remain unfunded,” the United Nations said in a Thursday statement.

In March 2013, militants from the Islamist Seleka rebel group overthrew the CAR government. Clashes between the Seleka insurgents and Christian militants confronting them have since swept the country.

Last weekend, violence in the capital Bangui resulted in 30 deaths and over 100 wounded, displacing thousands, according to the United Nations.

A transitional government was appointed in the CAR in 2014. That same year a UN peacekeeping mission was deployed in the country.

Elections are planned to be held in the CAR before December 31, 2015.
