MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Burkina Faso's transitional president Michel Kafando is currently inside the French diplomatic mission in the country's capital, Ouagadougou, the French ambassador to Burkina Faso said Monday.

On September 16, members of the presidential military guard unit arrested the transitional president and prime minister of Burkina Faso. Following the arrests, the military leadership announced that it had taken power in the country. Kafando has been reportedly kept under house arrest after the coup.

"With President Kafando’s permission, I confirm that he is indeed in the French residence," Gilles Thibault wrote on Twitter.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, along with the UN Security Council, has called for the immediate release of Kafando and Prime Minister Yacouba Isaac Zida of Burkina Faso, as well as a number of Ministers of State.

Burkina Faso’s transitional government was established in 2014 and was authorized to run the country until presidential elections scheduled for October 11, 2015.
