As many as 150 Nigerian villagers were reportedly killed fleeing suspected Boko Haram gunmen, some of them shot dead while others drowned in a river.

As many as 150 villagers were shot dead or drowned in a river while fleeing suspected Boko Haram gunmen in northeastern Nigeria's Yobe state, locals told AFP. According to the agency, a local government official put the death toll at around 50 people.

Nigeria vowed to ramp up the fight against Boko Haram with the election of its new President, Muhammadu Buhari. However, the ISIL-affiliated group continues perpetrating attacks and its leader Abubakar Shekau on Sunday released a recording mocking Chad's president for claiming that he was killed or incapacitated.
